Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government initiative designed to support the decarbonisation of heat in buildings across England and Wales. By providing upfront capital grants, the scheme helps homeowners and businesses transition from traditional fossil fuel heating systems to more sustainable options like heat pumps and biomass boilers.

Key Benefits

Significant Financial Support: Eligible property owners can receive £7,500 towards the cost of installing air or ground source heat pumps.

Extended Funding: The scheme has been extended until April 2028, with an additional £1.5 billion in funding announced to continue supporting installations.

Energy Efficiency: Heat pumps offer an efficient alternative to fossil fuel systems, reducing both carbon emissions and exposure to volatile energy prices.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme:

Property Location: Your property must be located in England or Wales.

Building Type: The scheme covers both domestic and non-domestic buildings, including owner-occupied homes, rental properties, second homes, and holiday homes.

Existing Heating System: The current heating system must be fossil fuel-based (such as oil, gas, or LPG) or an electric system that does not include a heat pump.

Energy Performance Certificate (EPC): A valid EPC, issued within the last 10 years, is required.

VAT Relief

VAT Relief

To incentivise the adoption of low-carbon heating systems, the UK government introduced a 0% VAT rate on the installation of energy-saving materials, including heat pumps and biomass boilers. This relief was in place from 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2027.

Installation Only: The 0% VAT rate applies to the labour costs involved in installing the heat pump or biomass boiler, not the equipment itself.

Time-Limited: The VAT relief is available for a specific period and may no longer apply depending on when you’re reading this.

Potential Savings: The VAT relief could significantly reduce the overall cost of installing a new heating system.
