Off grid installations have recently become cheaper to run with the increasing wholesale costs of electricity and the generators allowed to run on cheaper red diesel for offgrid and domestic generation of electricity.
Whilst we realise that diesel generators are not as eco-friendly as full renewable electricity, we do realise that in the current climate companies are finding it increasingly difficult when faced with increased electricity charges.
These energy charges can sometimes be in excess of a 500% increase and can make the difference in being able to afford to keep the lights on.
How Do Solar Panels Work?
Solar PV cells are made from layers of semi-conducting material, usually silicon. When light shines on the material, electrons are knocked loose, creating a flow of electricity.
The cells don’t need direct sunlight to work, they work perfectly on a cloudy day. However, the stronger the sunshine, the more electricity is generated.
Solar PV cells are grouped into modules, and modules are usually grouped into solar arrays – modules and arrays come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Most Solar PV systems are made up of panels that fit on top of your properties roof, but you can also install them on the ground, or fit solar tiles. Arrays come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
The electricity generated is direct current (DC), whereas the electricity you use on your premises is alternating current (AC). A PV inverter is installed along with the system to convert DC electricity to AC.
