Reliance Medical Cuts Energy Costs

Background

At MEB Total Renewable Energy, we understand the pressing need for businesses to reduce operational costs while embracing sustainable practices. Reliance Medical, a global leader in the manufacture and distribution of high-quality surgical dressings, healthcare products, PPE, medical equipment, and first aid supplies, approached us with precisely this challenge. With their energy consumption exceeding 135,000 kWh annually, the company faced rising electricity costs that were impacting their bottom line. They needed a solution that would not only reduce these costs but also align with their commitment to environmental sustainability. Recognising the potential of solar energy to meet these needs, Reliance Medical turned to us to design and implement a comprehensive solar photovoltaic (PV) system.

Solution

In response to Reliance Medical’s objectives, we set out to design a solar PV system tailored to their specific energy requirements. After conducting a detailed assessment of their site and energy usage, we installed 324 high-efficiency 460W solar panels. These panels were carefully positioned to capture maximum sunlight throughout the year, ensuring optimal energy generation.

To convert the solar energy into usable electricity, we integrated three 50kW inverters into the system. These inverters play an essential role in transforming the direct current (DC) produced by the solar panels into alternating current (AC) that powers the facility. Additionally, we implemented an Export Power Manager to regulate the flow of excess energy back into the grid, in line with the export limitations imposed by the local network operator. This ensured that the system operated within regulatory guidelines while maximising the use of the generated energy on-site.

Our system was commissioned in October 2022, with an estimated annual energy generation of 116,314 kWh. This design was intended to significantly reduce Reliance Medical’s reliance on grid electricity, thereby lowering their energy costs and supporting their sustainability goals.

Results

Since the system went live, it has delivered outstanding results, far exceeding our initial projections. In 2023 alone, the solar PV system generated 132,122 kWh of electricity, surpassing our estimates by over 15%. This impressive performance covered more than 90% of Reliance Medical’s annual energy consumption, resulting in substantial cost savings.

In just the first calendar year, the solar PV system saved the company approximately £18,000 in electricity costs. This financial relief was complemented by a significant reduction in their carbon footprint, reinforcing their commitment to sustainability.

The success of this project highlights the impact that well-designed renewable energy solutions can have on both cost savings and sustainability.

We are proud to have partnered with Reliance Medical to help them achieve their energy goals. This project not only showcases the effectiveness of solar PV technology in industrial settings but also demonstrates our ability to deliver tailored energy solutions that provide real, measurable benefits.
